Best Loads for 22-250
Any suggestions for the best loads for an '06 Rem 700 22-250 LV, 22" SS 1-14" Barrel?

H380 is the old stand by, with a 50 or 52 grain bullet for that twist.
If you have or can find a fast lot of surplus 852, it works extremely well also. I like the bulk pack bullets from wherever I can find them cheap. They shoot as well as (sometimes better) than the fancy (and more expensive) ballistic tips, HPs, etc. The one thing you can do to get more gain than anything else is good case prep. Segregate lots of brass by head stamp and weight, fire form, neck size, trim to length, neck turn, primer pocket uniform, and flash hole deburr. Then play around with seating depth. If that barrel is new, it will shoot better and better the more rounds you put through it.

First off the 22-250 is known to be picky and individualistic. My best load for accuracy was with a Sierra 55gr BTHP. Best varmint round with a Sierra 55gr Blitzking. Best powder for the HP was H380 at 39 gr. I wold also say that COAL is critical in getting the best accuracy out of your rifle. That you will need to determine for yourself. Oh my rifle was a Rem. 700 VLS.
I sold it and bought a new rifle that I haven't developed a load for yet. Quote:

In the mid 70s, I saw a guy at the local range shooting a heavy .22-250 with a 32X scope. He had 5 cases, a box of bullets, a can of IMR4895, a box of primers and a Lyman hand tool.
After firing 5 rounds, he'd punch out the primers, re-prime and then fill the cases to the top with powder. Then he'd seat bullets and fire another group. Turned out, he had a real tight chamber and the case necks (which he'd turned to exactly the right thickness) would expand just enough to release the bullets. He was shooting groups around 0.75" at 200 yds. That won't help you. Sorry. I just like telling that story......... |

I love meeting colorful characters like these. I met a guy working at the mega-gun store here in town a couple weeks ago and I must have spent 45 minutes talking to him and listening to his stories. I think he sais he's a former Wimbledon Cup winner. Just a nice old guy that I would likely enjoy spending some time at the range with.

Of course our guns might very well like different things, but my Rem 700 BDL loves a 50gn Nosler BT over 36gn H-Varget with a CCI-200 primer in WIN brass, seated to 2.47"
I've tried at least 10 bullets, 5 powders, 3 primers, 5 brass types, and the whole range of charges/seating depths, and I keep coming back to this load. With Remington's 1:14 twist you are limited to about 55gn, but the 50s just seem to do the best for me. Good luck, and have fun |

I have a vssf and it really likes sierra 50 grain varminters over varget. I'm getting ready to try some other powders though because I'm testing 50 grain vmax bullets and the varget didn't do as well with them.

I've owned and played around with a 22-250 for 30 years now. If I were to make a recommendation on bullets and powder it would be for 53 gr match HPBT over IMR 3031, since almost every 22-250 I've ever seen does very well with that. But since I hate buying expensive bullets and loading extruded powders, I use a 55 gr Hornady over WW760.

If you want screaming Meemie loads for your 22-250 try the Speer 52 grain original HP over 34.0 of IMR 4895 or 38.0 of H380. Both are max. so work up.

MAX load warning.
I did 35gr Varget with Nosler brass, 50gr V-Max and CCI large rifle primer. The Nosler brass, I read is made by Federal and is a little tighter internal dimension that Remingtin/Winchester. So I consider it a max load. 3915fps is the average muzzle velocity. It was my attempt to copy the Hornady factory load at 3850fps. I figure with the VLS 26in barrel, it is pretty close. It has killed deer, hog, coyote. The rifle used is the Remington 700 VLS. |
