Something for Mothers' Day parade. Kinda "gun-free safe zone" in reverse. Hope that doesn't end up in anti literature as "2km threat"...but THAT would wake up hunters.

Another great one from Oleg.
I like the close up of the sights/recever thing.
I like the picture in black in white too. the black complments the rifle. Good job!

You still owe me a poster...

Oleg, you once said you'd make a poster featuring a Schmidt-Rubin K31,
don't you remember?

One concern

This came from a friend:
Quote:
Normally I love the fact that your models look like "real people" and not like models. However, this one bothers me because something about the pose makes her look like all the terrible stereotypes of trailer trash redneck gun owners. Please, please, please bury the damn thing before it comes back to haunt us.
It is a preceptive statement (the person depicted lives in a trailer) but I wonder if it is relevant. I am of opinion that it isn't but will take suggestions.

-------
mussi,

I will make a poster for you when I visit my friend the collector (later in May): he has several of those rifles and will sit for a photo.

"Gun free zone in reverse..."

Yep, in machine gunner parlance it's called the beaten zone.

Perhaps the bandoleer gives that impression, Oleg. Otherwise, could the protest stem from the model's size? If so, that's rather a limited viewpoint. She looks more like a flower child to me.

The model is probably 250-300lbs and perfectly happy about it. I suspect that not all folks at the range are fit and trim...nor are all antis. I did request that the person I photograph on Monday dress up as if for an interview: would be nice add more formal images.

Please explain the comment about bandoleer: how is it a cliche?

Methinks Mort has a good idea. Delete the bandolier (which is a real cliche) and add flowers. Resonance to the famous old photo of the flower child putting daiseys in the barrel of the National Guard rifle (btw, violates safe gun handling). Evolution of the flower child.

Hrm. . my first thought was that the problem was the model in question looked too . ..well, for lack of a better word, dour. But then I realized that a gleeful smile might upset people, too. .

Perhaps a bit of setting or background would help -- I'm not sure. I think it's definitely the right model, and the right message, I'm just not sure . . hrm. I don't know. It's missing something, but I can't say what, so I'm not exactly being very helpful, am I? heh.

Perhaps seated instead of standing?

Well, one of the traditional stereotypes of the redneck gun-toter is that he (she) is wearing crossed bandoleers. This is just one bandoleer, but it makes all the difference as to perception.

My first thought on seeing this poster was "Mama Cass with an attitude".

Personally, I don't like the bandoleer either. But all in all, it is a good photo.

Oleg, I have looked at all your work on your web site. I can say and I think all here will agree with me. 99.9% of what you do is great right from the start. Once and awile , well .. so what.

Just the fact that you come here to TFL for feedback, I think makes us all proud..

Just one thing bothers me...

Muzzle control. I'd much rather see the rifle pointing down, but that might look too much like a low ready postion.

My first impression of the model is that she's someone who lives in the boonies and has quite a bit of land with livestock to protect, and maybe do some hunting. It appears that she has choosen a tool carefully for it's versitility for both long and short range use.

I love the closeup of the sight. It clearly explains the text to a neophite like me who's unfamilure with SMLE's. (BTW, what does SMLE stand for? [uh-oh, did I just open a can of worms?])

Jerry out.

Jerry,

No can of worms at all.

SMLE stands for Short Magazine, Lee Enfield.

The SMLE was first adopted in 1902 as the Rifle No. 1, SMLE, Mark I.

Prior to that time, two rifles had been made and issued to troops, a long-barrel rifle, and a short-barrel (and shorter overall) carbine. The rifle was issued to infantry troops, while the carbine was issued to cavalry and others who needed a lighter, smaller weapon.

The SMLE was an attempt to standardize rifle issue across the military and do away with the need to supply two distinctly different weapons.

This wasn't unique to the British, either. Most nations used to issue rifles to infantry and carbines (both in the same caliber, though) to other troops. The United States dropped this practice I think when it adopted the Krag Jorgenson, but it may have gone on through to the adoption of the 1903 rifle.

The US semi-reinvented this practice when it adopted the M 1 carbine for issue to non-infantry troops (even though many M 1 carbines made it to front-line infantry troops).

I didn't know you'd been out here to Colorado to visit recently!? That woman looks almost exactly like one of my neighbors. (And she's a `real corker' to boot! {GRIN!} I wouldn't be at all surprised if, after I take it over to show it to her, that she pulls a SMLE almost identical to that one out of one of her closets. Probably was her father's to begin with.) Great poster no matter what some people have been saying. Yet another one added to my ever expanding collection. {CHORTLE!}

Sorry Oleg, but on second thoughts, I have to agree the bandoleer is... well... it could really be replaced with flowers...

Really love your work, I spent the afternoon going through it yesterday.
