I put my red-dot sights above the mag well. I put them as far forward on the upper receiver as I can, but never actually onto the handguard rail.
For me, there are three reasons I don't want the red dot forward on the handguard: 1, the handguard is not as solid a mount as the receiver; the handguard can flex and heat up, causing your zero to shift (though it looks like you have a monolithic upper so this one won't apply to you). 2, the field of view through the sight is smaller at this point; I find target acquisition is slightly slower. And 3, the rifle becomes annoyingly front-heavy. Any time you ever see photos of our troops with Aimpoints or Eotechs, they have them mounted on the upper receiver above the mag well, even if they have a forward handguard rail on their rifle. |

Very nice build! You definitely used some nice pieces for your AR. I'm surprised I didn't notice your build thread earlier, but I think you did very well.
The Monolithic upper is pretty awesome. How much did that run you? Also, are your BUIS co-witnessed with the Aimpoint? The only things I would suggest at this point is a 1-point sling and maybe a flashlight. |
