How does 45colt recoil compare?

Hi All,

My experience with handguns is from .22 up to 357 mag in revolvers.

I am interrested in 45colt. I used to reload for 357 magnum and plan on resuming that.

I am thinking of getting single action revolver in 45 colt. Can you compare the recoil to 357 mag revolver or 45 acp in 1911.

Unfortunately range near me doesn't have one to rent.

The aesthetics of barrel around 4 3/4 inch appeals to me.

Thanks for any feedback

Cowboy ammo flips a wee bit less than the 1911.
Heavy Colt loads whack you like a stiff 44 magnum.

I like something in between. 45 Colt is a reloaders dream.

If you get a single action revolver, the recoil of the 45 Colt will be unlike the 357 mag or 45 acp 1911. The plow handle grip makes the muzzle of the gun climb a bit, but I don't really feel much punch to the hand like I do with a good stout 357 mag.

It does also depend a lot on the round you fire. I have a Ruger Blackhawk convertible model, in which I fire 45 acp and 45 Colt. The 45 Colt ammo I fire (not +p, but not wimpy CAS ammo either), I find the 45 Colt to recoil just a tiny bit more than the 45 acp.

If you were able to handle the .357 Magnum, the .45 Colt should pose no problem. Also, the .45 Colt, in a Ruger, is built on the .44 Magnum frame (as are all Blackhawks except the Flat Tops) and dampens the recoil very well.

My first handgun of my very own (not halvies) was a .45 Colt New Service, and is what I learned to shoot on.

The .45 Colt is very similar in recoil to the same gun in .357 Magnum -- unless you load the .45 down, then it's a pussycat. The .357 is higher in energy but for the same size gun it will also be heavier.

In a large frame Ruger, the .45 is heavier but then you'll probably be loading it +P.

.45 Colt is pretty much a reloader's cartridge because commercial ammo is so expensive (and anemic) for it.
