I was thinking it had to have something to do with the fracturing ability of the sand crystals absorbing the energy like ballistic ceramic plates.

That compiled with the abrasiveness of the sand particles has to be more destructive the more force you throw at it, like water, the hotter the round the faster it disintegrates.

Nice to know a few easy to store sandbags could be used to build a relatively bullet proof wall impromptu...
