Rifles are carried far more than they are shot. For a survival/rural/mountain/desert/jungle situation, I would most definitly take my Ruger M77 Mk II "Frontier" model in .308 with scout scope mounted over the barrel. I could carry that all day and it gives me .308 in a package about the size of an M1 Carbine.
