Yea, that's a good call. The walking stick would be the best idea - maybe you rolled your ankle getting out of the shower yesterday? Point is, it isn't too hard to find legitimate reasons for having one, and as far as I know, no one in the upstate area (excluding, perhaps, Westchester County), is ever going to care about it in the first place.
Definitely don't bring a switchblade into to NY - illegal by state law. Assisted-opening is OK, if a side folder, as far as I know - but I would always advise you to be more careful, not being a state resident. NY doesn't often play nice with outsiders.
