A horseback rider

came slowly trotting down a gravel track in a public land hunting area, toward me during deer season, once.

He was wearing blue jeans and a subdued color jacket. I stood in the bar ditch, wearing blaze orange hat, bandanna, and vest. When he pulled up and stopped near me, I asked him if he knew it was deer season. He did. I asked him if he knew he was on a National Forest, open to hunting. He did. Did he understand that he and his horse were in danger. HE DID NOT.

He wasn't a hunter, lived nearby, and was just exercising his horse.

I gave him a large blaze orange colored bandana and instructed him to wear it on his hat or draped over his shoulders.

I felt a little better watching him trot away back the way he came.
