Help finishing wood grips

I'm about to order some unfinished wood grips, they will be all prepared for refinishing for me I did some research and found that for what I wanted in a stain I should probably go with a dye based stain, not pigmented and spirited or solvent over water based for a dark richer color over hard light wood! I plan on finishing it with Linseed oil. can anyone out here give me the best way to apply the linseed oil to get a nice professional look? the grips are tactical, top half are checkerd, diagonally, bottom half is stippled, so I don't want the linseed oil to be glopping up inside the checkering or stippling. Would it be best to thin the linseed down with thinner and air spray it on? or does Linseed need to be rubbed into the wood? Would it be a couple stage process where I should rub the oil into the flat surfaces first, steel wool doing several coats over a few days then maybe air spraying the checkering lightly, any help would be greatly appreciated, anyone with expertise in the manner that can help me with the proper application can e-mail me @ [email protected]
Thanks for your help
