During WW2 the U S attempted to build a copy of the MG 42 in .30-06. It failed to operate properly because of dimensional differences in the cartridges, and would have cost a mint to redesign for the longer cartridge.
I would hazard a guess that converting an FG42 to .30-06 would pose even worse difficulties.
MG 42 LMGs are quite often rebarreled to 7.62X51 and operate perfectly with that cartridge. There is likely a modification in the belt feed for the shorter OAL cartridge.
The BREN GUN was also easily converted to 7.62.
Practically every sucessful MG or LMG design has been converted to 7.62 NATO and worked just fine with the NATO cartridge.
