I have killed most of my deer with a 357 magnum carbine. Power wise the 30 and the 357 from a carbine are very similar. I think you should be fine if you can place your shots.

Most of my shots on deer with the 357 are from my back porch using the rail and a lawn chair like a bench. Never had one go farther than 15 yards. Shot deer from a rand of 20-60 yards most of the time.

When I am actually out walking around to hunt I use a 45/70...

Shot placement is everything! I would rather take a round of 50BMG to the foot than a 22short to the base of the skull.

all 26 of my guns are 45/70 govt, 357 mag, 22 or 12 ga... I believe in keeping it simple. Wish my wife did as well...
