There were several 8mms in common use during World War I.

Already mentioned is the 8mm Lebel and it's various rifles.

Then there's the 8mm Mauser.

And finally the Austro-Hungarian 8mm.

I agree that it looks very much like a butchered French rifle, and that the value is low.
