I don't disagree with kraigwy, but it sounds like you have the wrong clips, maybe US M1903 clips or Swedish Mauser clips. Neither will fit the K.98k clip guide and will do just what you describe if you try to use them.

The standard German Mauser clip has three lugs on each side and measures .519" wide (not counting the lugs).

In general, a correct clip should: 1) hold the cartridges well, 2) fit the guide snugly, 3) not need to be held in place, 4) not fall out even if the rifle is bounced around, and 5) be easily ejected when the bolt is pushed forward. If it won't do all of those, it is the wrong clip.
