I think it would be really cool looking. If the rest of the car is real eye catching adding that as your shifter probably won't be as big a deal as if you had some Honda CRX hatchback with mismatching wheels and a body kit attached with Dollar Tree double sided tape.
What if you did it at an angle, like the barrel was pointing down toward your console. That way the grip would be at a better angle for the actual shifting.
