Your best info on bullet diameters and case lengths, etc., can be found in most reloading manuals,which typically can be had for less than $20. Another thing you can do is download reloading manuals on the Internet from powder suppliers. Winchester has reload data on their web site in PDF format.

As for the 9mm/.357 reference - the explanation may simple.

Actual 9mm bullet diameter - .355 inches
Actual .357 magnum/.38 special diameter - .357 inches.

As you can see, very close. In fact, there was a pistol introduced about two years ago that could shoot .380auto, 9mm, .38 special, and .357 magnum all from the same gun. Problem was, it was expensive and never quite made it to market.
