I kind of want to put an aperture Skinner sight on it instead, but would that be a waste for .308 winchester?

Not in the kind of places where I hunt, where a 100 yard shot is a fairly long poke. I have a Williams FoolProof receiver sight mounted on more than a couple of my heavy timber/brush rifles and like them for acquiring a fast sight picture. And any scope will diminish the fine handling properties offered by lever-action rifles and carbines like the Model 99. As you said, "She balances very well". Why compromise those fine handling qualities if you don't need to?
