I use the standard, cone shaped cleaning rod guide and a slotted jag. Patches stay on my one piece cleaning rod.
You can buy the M1a muzzle guide, I have at least one, they all work. However the dewey cone guide fits everything and that stays on the cleaning rod.
I can't find the M1/M1a device I use. I have a plastic tray that fits right into the magazine well and holds the bolt back as I clean. That is very useful.
