Bill, the bullet manufacturer will give you a recommended AOL so their product will have a better cahnce of functioning (safely) in a wide variety of brands and types of firearms.
Yes, AOL matters in a .45 if you're going to fine tune a load for a particular pistol. My rule of thumb is to run the AOL out in length and still retain function and accuracy
