even if there are no primers/powder/etc on the shelf, ask if they have any in back/behind the counter. i made a stop at my local sportsmans warehouse this evening and did just that (small pistol). the guy said he thought there were 500 in back and went to get them for me. he came back with a box of 5,000! said here you go and handed them over.
