You have a broken buffer, you can get them from Numrichs or on auction sites for cheap. The black ones are supposed to be better than the white ones. There should be a plastic pin the holds the buffer between the side plates of the action. The buffer is most often damaged by shooting hyper velocity rounds. These beat the buffer to pieces. If you stick to high velocity, 1260 fps, you will be have no problems. Marlin intoduced the last shot hold-open in the mid '80s.
