Military rifles don't usually have butt pads, only metal butt plates. If yours is plain wood, the buttplate has probably been removed. Installing a butt pad may work OK or may look like heck depending on what the stock looks like.
I would be inclined to install something, since otherwise any blow to the stock could chip or split the wood.
