It's pretty easy to tell if my 642 is unloaded. You can see the rims, you can hear the ammo clack up and down as I go up the stairs and the weight of the gun goes up by about 50% when boolits are in it.
I haven't walked out with an unloaded gun but I have forgot the whole gun at home before.
