Caleb, I have an S&W/Eastfield 916,too. actually the second one I have owned. Like yours, mine was free with another purchase,had been cut to just legal limit and didn't work - wow, like dejavu all over again.
Anyway, if you haven't figured it out yet, you are supposed to loosen or remove the butt stock before trying to take out the reciever pins.
These shotguns are not sophisticated or pretty, but I can hit well with them.
IIRC, they were actually mfg'd by Springfield.
