Benellis are good guns. I don't own one but have shot several and liked them. They're reliable, accurate, fast, and low-recoiling (even for an inertial recoil gun). Some like them better than say the 1100 because they aren't as picky with ammo and there's no gas ring or such to worry about.

They are expensive but then again, double guns are, too. They used to be more reasonably priced but it's gone up. A $200 will work just as well as a $900 Benelli, though. Benellis are popular with both LE and military so that boosts civy appeal. Everytime LE starts using something, civies usually follow suit. As to why your friends changed guns, who knows. Ask them. Maybe it was time for something new.

One might say that if it isn't broken why fix/change it, but maybe they got tired of the same old thing all the time. I think that the other guns out there Ithaca, Mossberg, Remington, etc are all good guns so it's just personal preference.
