7.62X39..... about the same as a 30-30 on game.

It will get the job done. Make sure your rifle is accurate enough and use hunting ammo not FMJ ball.

Most of the SKS/AKs I have shot are not accurate enough over 150 yards. Some may be but many are not. What ever distant you can keep 3 or 4 shots inside a coffee can lid is your deer range.

That said, I would rather use a 243, 257 roberts, 260, 7-08 on deer .
