When I get the funds to purchase an all-around precision and distance rifle I will be picking up a Remington 700 CDL chambered in .30-06. Ballistically identical to the .308 but a little better at longer ranges with heavier bullets. Ammo selection and availability is excellent, it's a proven cartridge and it will do anything that needs doing just about anywhere in the world. You can use it for everything from coyotes to moose and caribou and kodiak in North America. It's an all-around rifle/caliber combination that will serve you well on any hunt anywhere in the world save for a handful of species in Africa. .308 is a good choice but I'd prefer the venerable .30-06 for sheer ammo selection in a wide variety of bullet weights and power levels along with ammo availability.
