Flieger has an excellent point- there is a wide variety in Garands, and some are worth $1000... some are worth more, some are worth less.

IMO, the best way to get a Garand for those without much expertise is to go via the CMP; they have less expensive military surplus rifles in decent conditions, they have fully reconditioned rifles in basically new condition (new barrels and all).

I would probably recommend hanging on to the AR if you like it and looking into the CMP. If that isn't practical, then I'd educate myself on what makes for more or less valuable Garands to make sure I received good value in a purchase or trade.
