Keep them in a 3" circle and don't move it back till you are very good with single fire and rapid fire and holding a good group.
If you had a target down range at say 15ds and could see the bullets hit from your firing at 7yds you would get an idea of what your gun and you can do.
If you then go to the further distance you will see your groups spread.
7 and 10 is good for self defense, stay with it.
