The general purpose of the shot cup is to prevent shot from being deformed during its journey down the barrel and through the choke's constriction, and thus provide better pattern density (by reducing the number of flyers). The pliability of the wad is sufficient to allow the shoot to be constricted in the same manner as it would be without a shot cup. With various designs, shot cups can also spread or contain the pattern to some extent.
