I've never seen buffers do anything but cause problems, except in certain model H&K semis.

(I haven't owned one of those H&Ks, but have been informed by knowledgeable H&K enthusiasts that they are appropriate and required for those specific models.)

I'm unfamiliar with those designs, but fairly familiar with others. That said, I don't know what a buffer is intended to do in non-H&K guns, as in most gun designs, the buffer isn't protecting the gun, the frame, or the shooter...
