Remington 870s are certainly nice shotguns in their own right but their "popularity" status (over the Winchester SXP) might have something to do with the fact that the 870 has been made for well over a half a century.

No doubt at least partially a by-product of the Remington's steel receiver as opposed to the Winchester's alloy receiver.
