OK, its essentially an infrared spotlight as many NV tubes are IR sensitive.

That does give me some cause for concern though. Is the unit actually an image intensifier or an infrared viewer? Many of the lower price "night vision" are basically just an infrared viewing product, not true image amplification. Those "starlight scopes" don't need additional lighting for good performance.
