If you use a thick, brightly colored foam target, even .22 holes can be easily seen at 100 yds with 8 power binoculars.
Being cheap, I use the foam that pork chops and chicken are packed with, from the grocery, especially the bright yellow ones.
For bigger targets, get poster sized foam boards, from the office supply or dollar stores.
Paste your favorite target face on these and el cheapo, easy to see holes in targets.
