Junior has had snakes since he was 12 and he is now 19... Wild game has fed them when ever possible. He did help out a shop owner for rats and rabbits but heavily leaned to wild tree rats and cottontails. You risk other issues with captive mammals I would worry with more.

Our local shop that opened a couple years ago they sell rats for $9.50
This snake has had noting but squirrels for 3-4 years.

Junior lost one 8 footer to a mouth disease (HECK IF I KNOW WHAT ONE) but he got it that way and tried to doctor/husbandry it through it but it perished. That snake had been fed store bought food for it's entire 8 foot long life.
BTW, lead is also a non-issue from what junior learned in research and I figure they are already stupid critters so that side affect won't matter
