As to cartridges suitable for these guns - from the literature as well as end labels from period H&R gun boxes:
.32 CF - .32 S&W and .32 H&R Long (and the similar .32 Merwin & Hulbert)
.38 CF - .38 S&W
All of these were BLACK POWDER loads. H&R didn't "officially" consider their firearms capable of handling smokeless/Nitro powder loads until 1905, when they first advertised that change.
