I'm no old gunfighter, but I'm reasonably confident that experiencing the impact of a fired bullet is undesirable. Similarly, I also don't want to get hit by a Peterbilt going 70 mph, but I don't think that it's necessary to experience it firsthand to suspect that it's probably going to be harmful.
I could be totally out of line with these observations, however.
