I think that the technique you describe is clearly the best method to teach students since it's what's going to work EVERY time on ANY gun and is really the only effective technique to use on a typical off-the-shelf self-defense pistol if you want speed and accuracy.
On the other hand, I'm not quite ready to tell Rob Leatham that he's not using the proper trigger technique...
Clearly what he's doing works very well for him with the equipment he uses.
