Both the M1 and M14 rifles have the same issues; trigger guard clamped home stresses the bedding.

So, after you've finished a day of shooting and cleaned the darned thing up, put it away with the trigger guard only half way closed. That'll preserve the bedding force the receiver has to the stock. Slap it closed the next time it's used.
