Pick a spot and swab on alcohol with a Q tip. If it removes the finish, it is varnish. Swab on lacquer thinner. If it removes the finish, it is lacquer. True oil finishes are rare, but almost anything can be touched up with Birchwood Casey's stock kit. Some gunsmiths use a French oil finish. There are several stock finishing and touch up techniques listed in gunsmithing books and stockmaking books.An oil finish will continue to oxidize and sink into the wood, requiring touch ups at intervals.
