Your "squib load" was oft referred to as "gallery loads" in the olden days. Cheap stuff for using indoors or to allow your "real rifle" to be used for small game.

Glad you posted this as I had been meaning to type in a ton of info on this - from an article called Shoot Cheap/American Rifleman, 10/87. Some really good stuff about light loads for rifles.

Alas, nothing on your .303, but the author (Roy Dunlap) says that he used 4-5 grs WW231, Unique, Bullseye, & Red Dot rather than the standard 3 gr "gallery load" with round balls. This for a 25 yd loading rather than a 50 ft deal for gallery loads.

One thing mentioned in the article is that with reduced loads, you can develop a situation very similar to excesssive head spacing & although the case will still be suitable for these reduced loads, they should be marked cleary so as to never again be used for standard pressures.

Will have to get off my posterior & get this stuff in here ...
