I zero my Savage MKII at 40 yds for squirrels.

If I were you, I'd choose the ammo I'm going to use and I would zero it so I could kill a squirrel the farthest I could by just aiming dead on. For example, try zeroing it at 40 and then shoot it at, say, 20 yds, 30yds, and 50 yds. By aiming dead on could you kill a squirrel at those ranges. Keep trying different zeros until you find the one that gives you the best range without any compensation.

Note: Your ammo will make a big difference in where you will zero your gun. By using CCI Stingers, you'll gain a little range over regular .22LR ammo.
