3v is fine for a pistol light, but I'd go with a 6v or higher system for a long gun. roughly speaking, I guess I'd say a minimum of 25 lumens for a pistol, 50-60 for a shotgun, 100 for a carbine.

since you're getting a light for a scattergun, rather than the M3, I'd get the standard 6v foreend light and use the $ difference to get a 6P and holster for my pistol belt, or apply it towards an M3 carbine setup.
