I agree, if its a hunting gun, 45-70 is the way to go. Keep in mind that the 45-70 has got some nifty ballistics to it and it tends to drop like a rock. Not that you can't make long shots with it, but you've got put some time in with the gun. 200 yards and in it's pretty straight forward. Outside of that range and it would be tough.
