They had 2 options: they could have arrested in themselves (the Sgt at Arms, accompanied by the Capitol Police) and thrown him in jail for civil contempt. Or they could have impeached him. The jail thing was probably the better option because the Senate democrats would not have upheld an impeachment. But of course instead they did nothing, because this was all just for show.
