Varget burns quite clean for me in both .223 and .308.I use 25 gr behind a 69 gr SMK or Noslere comp.I just don't use the lighter bullets.It works quite well in the 45-46 gr range with a 168 gr 308'

I suggest the powder is not the problem.The use of a slow powder behind a light bullet with a mild charge will make for an incomplete burn.That will be dirty.It is the application.
