New 870s have them.
If you intend to use the gun for HD, SHTF, or duty, then yes it is necessary. Otherwise you could end up with jam that requires you to either slam the buttstock into the ground with great force while racking the forend or disassemble the gun.
The former has been know to result in cracked stocks fwiw.
