Have you also thought about maybe getting some inexpensive magnetic door alarms for all your external doors and windows, like
these? I'm guessing that at 21, you don't have too much money to spend on something much more expensive, and since it's an apartment, you probably aren't able to install any type of more permanent alarm system yourself. They're very easy to install and don't do any damage to walls or door frames.
