I haven't had to resort to using small rifle primers in handgun ammo, but I've read of plenty who have. I understand some don't even try to buy small pistol and only stock small rifle for both.

The only caveat is the cup may be too hard for reliable ignition in some "tuned" handguns that have had the mainspring reduced. They should work fine in service pistols.
