Brno 34/08 brazillian

I was having a debate with my friend.
He said that if a rifle is marked 34/08, it was converted to 30-06 and converted/hardendened to accept that cartridge. His summary: if it's so marked, then it's been changed from it's original cartridge.
I say: the Brazillians might have just refurbed the lot of them and marked them, but left some in the original cartridge depending on who was using them (army vs police or whatnot) and the receiver mark will tell.
Logistically, his view makes sense. I might be wrong.
Do I owe someone a six pack?
