Depends usually the barrel is marked with what choke the barrel is. If it is an older shotgun a lot of the times the barrels were made with a choke built into the milling (or whatever you want to call it). Usually it's safe to shoot slugs with an IC - Improved Cylinder and a Modified Cylinder. I shoot RIFLED slugs from my Remington 870 Wingmaster with a Modified barrel.
